People who have bulimia or bulimia nervosa have periods where they are bingeing, which means that they are eating large amounts of food in a short time. How often these periods appears differ from person to person, but after the bingeing periods they often get a bad confidence, and to regain control they get rid of the food usually by vomiting. Some other ways of getting rid of the food is to use laxative, to do excessive exercising or to start dieting or fasting. There are often hard to find out if a person has bulimia, because he or she often has a normal weight. Unlike anorexia there are very seldom that someone die because of bulimia.
Bulimia is as good as non-existent in India, and in 2004 there was only one reported case which involved a 15 year old girl. The reason why bulimia don’t is a problem in India when anorexia is it, is because most Indians don’t have the possibilities to bingeing because they don’t have money to by amounts of food like most Britons.
In UK, bulimia is usually developed around the age of 18, and as the other types of eating disorders it mostly affects women. The numbers of people who are suffering from bulimia varies a lot from different sources, and while some say that about 4% of all British women are struggling with eating disorders, other say that as many as 8% have the same problem. The statistics also say that about 5% of the people who have bulimia also develop anorexia. Anyway, if you are comparing the British statistics with the Indian once, is it easy to see that Bulimia is much more common in UK.
