Before we started our project we made this assertion:
”We think that dieting, eating disorders and lifestyle related illnesses have a lot to do with economy and wealth. To examine this assertion we are going to compare India and the United Kingdom.”
Now when we have worked with this project for one week we have found out that this assertion is correct, but economy and wealth are not the only counting factors. We think that culture, environment, media, ideals, knowledge about nutrition, genes and supply for food are also important factors. By having this project we have found out that there are several differences between India and the UK and the main differences are:
- Dieting is most common in the UK. Supply for food, knowledge about nutrition and ideals also play an important part when it comes to dieting.
- Eating disorders are much more common in the UK than in India. The main reasons might be that these countries have different ideals. India is not influenced as much by media and don’t have the same supply for food as the UK.
- Nutrition has a lot to do with supply for food, knowledge about nutrition, enough money to buy healthy food. Another factor is that if there is more supply for unhealthy food people might buy this instead of more healthy food.
- There are more people who are overweight or obese in the UK than in India. There are also more people who are suffering form cardiovascular diseases. There are more people with type 2 diabetes in India.
